Installation of Goodwyn Alpha Platform Oil Store, conducted by the GWA Mechanical Workgroup
The old oil store was insufficiently bunded and was decommissioned to be replaced by individual portable bunds, this project which has now become best practice in NWS.
The new weld-free oil stores have met all expectations by providing easier access, safer storage, reduced spill-risk, reduced use of oil absorbent and a cyclone-proof, cost-effective solution.
Lateral thinking and team motivation ensured that the oil store was designed, constructed and installed with minimum cost and on time (ie. prior to the cyclone season).
Cossack Pioneer Reduction in Flare Gas Emissions, conducted by the Cossack Pioneer Asset team
The Cossack Pioneer Flaring policy has been designed to minimise flaring of produced gases at all times, this stands as one of Woodside's best examples of continuous improvement.
The application of operating procedures combined with the consistent objective of minimising unplanned system outages has led to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions; typically a 70% reduction in flared gas per event.
Cossack Pioneer has continued to recognise that flare gas has value, a philosophy that is spreading into many new projects.
Mauritanian Drilling Campaign Waste Disposal Project, conducted by the Mauritania Project team
The Mauritania drilling campaign was Woodside's first international drilling campaign. At the project concept phase in 2000 the team developed the vision that Woodside would behave to the same standards in Mauritania as they would in Australia.
This meant eliminating untreated waste discharge in an environment where no effective waste management (and very little general) infrastructure existed in the country.
The project achieved it's objectives by; construction of an incinerator for general waste; the purchase of an Australian designed turbo-burner for Hydrocarbon contaminated waste; effective segregation to maximise recyclable items; training of the local people in safe segregation and incinerator use.
All recycling funds collected were put back into the Mauritanian community.
The Woodside Environment Award has been running successfully since 1997 and is open to all Woodside employees and contractors for projects / initiatives undertaken for all Woodside operations. Eligibility is based on projects that have / or will make a significant contribution to improving Woodside's environmental performance.
Each year's winner receives $25 000 to donate to an approved environmental charity or project of their choice. Previous recipients of the Environment Award donations have been: the WA Marine Turtle Project ($15,000); the Home Creek Land Care Group (Darwin) ($15,000); the Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre ($12,500) and the Glossy Black Rescue Fund (Kangaroo Island) ($12,500).
