The feasibility of the deal, however, is dependent upon whether or not Chile has the technological wherewithal to handle this type of importing and to build the necessary fuel processing plants.
According to Chilean President Richard Lagos, who is on a state visit to the SE Asian nation, “[I have decided to study [Indonesia’s] offer to provide natural gas. [I] will hold talks with Indonesia on the possibility of joint projects between our National Petroleum Company and Indonesian firms, as well as on future possibilities on the gas matter.”
On the matter of his usual supplier of natural gas, though, Lagos was scathing. According to the President, “I blame Argentina for a new cut in gas supply. It has not explained what is going on in these days.”
Argentina, itself facing an energy crisis, is expected to further cut gas exports to Chile as of 1 May from the current 3.3 million cubic metres to 4.25 million cubic metres.
