QUEENSLAND is setting up a Geothermal Energy Centre of Excellence to help the state take advantage of 'hot rocks' or geothermal energy.

The state government will provide $15 million over the next five years and the University of Queensland will contribute a further $3.3 million.

Queensland has massive geothermal energy resources in the Cooper and Eromanga basins in the state's southwest, which the government said was potentially able to supply the entire country with electricity for the next 6000 years.
