The Emu Downs Wind Farm in Badgingarra, a joint venture between Griffin Energy and Stanwell Corporation, was opened by Premier Alan Carpenter at a ceremony attended by more than 200 industry, community and government dignitaries.

The wind farm is expected to provide enough energy to power more than 50,000 homes each year, with 48 turbines producing up to 80MW of electricity to WA's main power grid.

Griffin Group executive general manager of power generation Wayne Trumble said the wind farm would reduce greenhouse emissions by 280,000 tonnes per year with no waste products.

Stanwell acting chief executive Gary Humphrys said a key feature of the project was the "state-of-the-art blades", which were the first to be made in Australia for an Australian wind farm.

The two-year project involved extensive feasibility studies and consultation on issues such as wind monitoring, impacts on amenity and wildlife, as well as compatibility with the regional telecommunications system.
