The Philippines Department of Energy (PDOE) has announced the following goals to achieve their target:
- To become the world's largest geothermal energy producer
- To become South East Asia's largest wind energy producer
- To become the primary solar power manufacturing centre in South East Asia
- To install up to 250MW of solar, ocean or biomass power-producing capacity.
The Philippines is already the second largest producer of geothermal energy after the US and the administration intends to continue exploration and exploitation of geothermal energy sources across the islands.
Solar power will be getting a boost with the installation of the Sinag 1 farm in Puerto Princesa, with over 25,000 solar panels spread across 20 hectares, making the 5MW nameplate capacity project one of the largest solar facilities in the world. In addition to Sinag 1, a 1MW solar farm is planned for northern Mindanao, as well as a large manufacturing plant for solar power wafers.
According to studies by the World Wildlife Fund and the University of the Philippines, 1038 sites across the islands have the potential to provide 7404MW of wind energy.
Over the next decade, PDOE intends to install over 417MW of wind power projects, including a 25MW farm in Bangui Bay and numerous smaller projects, to provide renewable energy for remote island areas.
Biomass energy has also been increased with the announcement of the investment of $US100 million ($A132 million) by UK firm Bronzeoak to expand its Biomass facilities in the Philippines, adding to the 100MW and 30MW biogas co-generation plants at Victorias Milling and Talisay.
