THE Vestas-Australian Wind Technology factory has opened in Portland, Victoria, generating new jobs and giving the area's renewable energy industry a shot in the arm.

The plant will supply blades for around 120 Vestas turbines across Victorian wind farms at Yambuk, Cape Bridgewater, Cape Nelson and Cape Sir William Grant, as well as having the potential to future export to countries such as Canada.

The factory has an annual production capacity of 70-80 blades and is expected to directly employ around 50 people from the local area, with the possibility of attracting subsidiary industries and specialists.

"Expanding energy sources that have low or zero greenhouse gas emissions is critical to the success of the Australian government's long-term energy generation strategy," said Greg Hunt, parliamentary secretary to the minister for the environment and heritage, at the opening ceremony.
