The €40 million ($A63.2 million), 10MW project will be constructed near Pocking in Bavaria and it will provide electricity for around 3300 households from its almost 62,500 individual modules.
“This is a new milestone in the solar photovoltaic (PV) business and in the development of large solar plants, in particular,” said Shell Solar manager Wolfgang Lange.
“It is an important achievement and will significantly contribute to the economies of scale and lowering the price of solar PV.”
The plant is estimated to be able to save around 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year and is expected to be completed in March 2006.
“Solar PV is setting the trend for solar projects on a large scale, not only because it is an environmentally friendly way to supply energy, but it also generates jobs,” said CIAG spokesman Christian Lieb.
