The contract, due to begin in 2006, involves constructing three biomass power plants in as-yet-undisclosed European locations. The largest plant will produce 250MW of power from 4 million tons of primarily wood biomass.
GER fully complies with the EU’s environmental sourcing and procurement regulations and the wood supplies secured through GER’s Urban Tree Certification System (UTCS) for the plants are completely Kyoto-compliant and environmentally certified, the company said.
“The UTCS program will have a major positive impact on how American cities and towns handle wood waste and storm-damaged wood in the future,” said GER chief executive officer Joseph Murray.
“The contract firmly establishes a new market place for UTCS-certified wood. It is an opportunity for United States communities and local governments to reduce greenhouse emissions, recycle, and participate in global carbon reduction.”
