Origin Energy installed the 9.6 kilowatt (KW) grid-connected solar system to a commercial building called '60L' in the trendy Melbourne suburb of Carlton. Origin said the solar system consists of 64 solar panels mounted on the roof and is capable of generating 14-megawatt hours of emission-free energy per year for at least the next 25 years.
"The solar system installed at 60L will initially reduce electricity costs by up to 10 per cent and abate 14 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year. The capacity of the system can be easily scaled to service future energy demand," said Origin Energy's executive general manager of generation, Andrew Stock.
"Grid connected solar power is the fastest growing form of energy in the world today. Its incorporation into 60L as a leading example of sustainable buildings demonstrates to the Australian commercial property market the way of the future."
