RENEWABLE ENERGY

Green energy stocks out of favour with the markets

Delays in commercialising new technology as well as rumours of corporate selloffs have taken the shine off green energy stock this year. Renewable Energy has dived 82 per cent to 14 cents after a trading as high as $2.46 in the middle of last year. Energy Development has plunged 35% to $4.37 after hitting a high of $14.35 in early 2001. Despite delivering a good profit result for 2001, Pacific Hydro shares have fallen 15% to $4.37.

Share market investors have lost patience with Energy Development as its waste to energy recycling facility is running at least two years behind schedule. As for Renewable Energy, the first sale of its biomass technology has faltered because of unrelated technology at the plant not performing to specifications.

Pacific Hydro's share price is being hurt by rumours that its 19% shareholder, American Electric Power, will offload assets outside the United States.
