SA Govt plans big cuts to energy use, greenhouse gas

The South Australian Government has said it plans to cut energy use by 15 per cent by 2010.

"In the past year alone government spent $100 million on fuel for our vehicles and powering our buildings. That level of fuel consumption created more than one million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions," said the Premier of SA, Mr Mike Rann. "We are a big player in the market and we have to cut back."

Mr Rann said SA would make the cuts by building on the State's natural advantages in wind-powered electricity and plans to build up to 8000 large windmills across the State over the next 10 years.

He also said the Government would build two small hydro-electric facilities in conjunction with a Tasmanian electric company and pledged the Government would reduce its greenhouse production by 80,000 tonnes a year.
