Cobra trapped by poor hole conditions

Poor hole conditions were encountered this week when coming out of the hole, which has been drilled to its total planned depth of 3100m.

Logging conducted during drilling has indicated possible hydrocarbons in the Hedinia sandstone but additional wireline logging tools were unable to access the reservoir interval, forcing Oil Search to carry out the wire trip operation.

The hole will be enlarged during the wire trip, which will secure the long section of open hole above the target Hedinia and Iagifu sandstones and will also improve access to drill and log a short section of new hole below the Iagifu.

Oil Search expects the casing will be set over the next week making further data available in the following week.

Cobra-1A is primarily directed at the Iagifu sandstone - the principal reservoir in the Gobe and SE Gobe fields - in a seismically defined sub-thrust prospect.

Oil Search said Cobra-1 is the first well in PNG to target a sub-thrust play as the primary target.

Participants in Cobra-1A are operator Oil Search (62.556%), Murray Petroleum (26.497%) and Cue Energy (10.947%).
