Melbourne-based explorer Cue Energy, which holds a 3.29% stake in the well, said it was located within the SE Gobe unit and was a southeast extension of the SE Gobe field.
The well is a follow-up to the nearby SEG-11 well, which was recently responsible for extending the significant SE Gobe field. Cue said drilling would reach a total depth of 2400m.
Oil Search is operator of the SE Gobe unit, holding a 52.9% stake, while Southern Highlands Petroleum (23.69%), Santos (9.39%) and Ampolex (5.95%) are also partners.
In its December quarterly, Cue said it received $A1.8 million in revenue from its 260 barrels per day share of SE Gobe production.
Cue also holds a stake in the Santos-operated Jeruk oil field in Indonesia.
Shares in Cue were unchanged in morning trade at 23c.
