The agreement was signed in Port Moresby by the two leaders and, aside from the closer oil and gas ties, it also calls for Malaysia to help PNG develop its information and communication technology sector, tourism and services.

This new relationship between Asian neighbours is being seen by many observers, experts and analysts as part of a PNG initiative to reduce its dependence on neighbouring Australia. The island continent is currently the biggest investor in the PNG economy.
