A packed audience heard some positive news on the oil and gas front from two of the nation's leading producers at the opening session of AOG Energy 2024 on Wednesday.

The event is again well attended with 50 international organisations participating and around six thousand people expected to visit the Perth Exhibition and Conference event staged over the next three days.

Opening the first session at the Future Energy Forum, Western Australia's Minister for Energy; Environment and Climate Action, Reece Whitby, told the audience that the state is on target to become a world clean energy "superpower".

He highlighted the importance of the state's vast natural gas reserves in helping it reach that status.

Industry highlights

The two leading industry representatives, Danny Woodall from Chevron Australia and Liz Westcott from Woodside Energy re-iterated the Minister's words on the importance of natural gas to WA's future and noted that the local gas industry is playing a key role in decarbonising the globe.

Woodall said that new gas supply will continue to be needed in WA for a long time to come, and that Chevron is developing new opportunities through its Wheatstone project to further feed the domestic market.

He also noted that the Gorgon project is now the world's largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) system and that Chevron continues to develop ways to grow it further.

Westcott told the audience that the industry needs to do a better job of explaining what it does.

She also noted that this year is the 40th anniversary of Woodside gas entering the domestic gas market.

The year will also mark Woodside achieving several significant milestones with its Scarborough and Browse LNG developments.

She also noted that after 40 years, Woodside will be retiring some of its historic Karratha infrastructure.

Westcott also highlighted Woodside's significant CCS plans.
