A BP spokesperson told Energy News BP had made, and would continue to make, adjustments to its production output in response to demand changes, but did not say how much output had been cut to date since the oil price crashed and COVID-19 pandemic caused an oversupply of fuel worldwide.
Due to current circumstances the refinery had also deferred a turnaround at the facility which was scheduled for early 2021. The turnaround is now slated for late that year.
"This decision has not been made lightly and our turnaround team and contracting partners have been advised of the delay and will adjust planning accordingly," the spokesperson told Energy News.
"At Kwinana Refinery we are focused on protecting the health and safety of our people and maintaining fuel supply to our customers and communities during this challenging time.
"The refinery has enacted its pandemic action plan, which focuses on reducing the amount of people at the refinery and enacting social distancing."
The spokesperson would not say how many workers had been removed from the Kwinana site, or whether any staff had been made redundant.
