RESA's latest South Australia Mining and Resources Jobs Reports Vacancy Analysis, which provides an indicator of hiring intensions and market sentiment, revealed that 156 job advertisements were placed in the state last month.

That was a slight dip from May but is consistent with trends for the end of the financial year.

The results for the final quarter of 2016-17 indicated an overall increase in the number of advertisements following consistent growth over the past 13 months.

Professionals and trades shared in the greatest job demand, with more than half of the vacancies for trade and operator-level positions, which continued the May increase in the proportion of traditional trade needs.

There was also some growth in demand for supervisor and managers.

Drilling down to the oil and gas industry, RESA workforce development manager Jodie Badcock told Energy News that SA's oil and gas sector has been "barely visible" over most of the past 18 months, with just one or two positions advertised each month.

"In the last quarter, however, there has been a slight shift with over 4% of monthly advertisements being in the oil and gas sector in four of the last five months," she said.

"This is in a period where overall vacancies have tripled."

During this period the occupations most advertised were well crew (32%), engineering (23%) and technicians (9%).

Senex Energy's announcement in March of the commencement of a $15 million exploration project in the Cooper Basin and the SA government's $24 million commitment to gas extraction grants were also indicators that oil and gas activity may be on the increase, she said.

RESA's occupational breakdown for June showed a slight drop in the proportion of equipment operators and oil and gas operations, which stemmed from an increase in business development and support, drilling and blasting, electrotechnology, geoscience/surveying, and transport and logistics roles.

RESA has monitored job advertisements for SA's resources and energy sector since 2013.
