Optimax Extreme is Australia’s first 100 octane fuel containing ethanol. It is designed to provide sharper acceleration and greater engine responsiveness.
“Shell is the first major oil company to offer a ‘super-premium’ blend, giving thousands of motorists an ethanol choice they haven’t previously had,” said federal industry and resources minister Ian Macfarlane.
“At last month’s ethanol roundtable I looked to the oil companies for greater support of the local ethanol industry and congratulate Shell for so clearly supporting the establishment of a commercially viable ethanol industry.
“A viable ethanol industry in Australia is contingent upon acceptance by the fuel companies and the motorist. The ever-increasing number of petrol outlets now selling ethanol blends is testament to growing acceptance by both parties.
“Australian car manufacturers will report back to me next month with an agreed label to be placed near the petrol cap on locally built vehicles – an important part of the government’s measures to re-build confidence in ethanol.”
Last year Macfarlane also awarded more than $12 million in capital grants for ethanol producers. This will increase Queensland’s ethanol output ten-fold.
The Australian Government is developing an industry action plan to ensure Australia reaches its biofuels targets of 350 megalitres by 2010. Ethanol has been awarded tax-free status for another next five years to allow the industry to fully establish itself as a competitive fuel additive.
Shell Optimax Extreme also has a substantially lower sulphur and benzene content than the maximum levels set under the Federal Government’s fuel quality standards.
