The Shell study is expected to take a year to complete. BP did not state a timetable for completion.
Shell Exploration and Production Middle East’s director new business development Gavin Graham said the Kirkuk study was part of a broad program of assistance to the Iraqi energy industry.
“Shell’s contribution to the study, which will improve the understanding and reservoir management of the Kirkuk field, is in line with our continued commitment to supporting the Iraqi oil industry, and establishing a material and enduring presence in the country,” Graham said.
Shell is also planning to provide training to Iraqi oil industry workers.
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, citing BP Plc, the UK giant has signed a deal with the Iraqi oil ministry to conduct a reservoir analysis of the Rumaila oilfield.
BP said the study would be done in partnership with the Iraqi oil ministry and the state-owned South Oil Co.
Like Shell, BP will also conduct a training program for Iraqi oil engineers.
