Qatar, Shell sign GTL deal

Royal Dutch/Shell and Qatar Petroleum have announced the signing of a JV to build a US$5-6 billio...

The plant will be used to produce naphtha and environmentally friendly diesel fuels. In a joint statement the two firms have announced a target of 70,000 barrels per day by 2009. This figure is expected to rise 140,000 bpd by 2011.

GTL is relatively untested technology but it is being seen as a potential source of fuel as demand for less-polluting diesel vehicle engines increases.
