Iran, India LNG deal hits speed bump

Reports in the Indian media seem to indicate the proposed 5 million ton LNG deal between Iran and India has hit a snag over pricing issues. At stake is the chance for India to have a share in an Iranian oil field and the opportunity for India to diversify its sources of LNG.

In a report published in The Hindu daily, official level talks between the two nations, under the auspices of the Indo-Iran joint working group of hydrocarbons, has apparently led to the formation of two committees to examine the pricing for the Iranian LNG and the “related proposal” for ONGC Videsh Ltd to obtain a share in the Kushk-Husseinieh oil field.

The two committees have to submit their recommendations by 15 August 2004. If a satisfactory agreement can be reached by then, India and Iran will have a deal, it is reported.
