The need for more fuel oil comes on the back of lower than expected rainfall and slower melting of mountain snow; both needed to fuel Pakistan’s many rivers and thus its hydroelectric power plants. Natural gas supply has also been erratic.

According to Tariq, “We plan to import 0.5 million tons of fuel oil by June which is all related to Hubco and [IPPs].”
