Six GTL projects valued at over $6 billion have been allocated land on the Burrup Peninsula, near Karratha, which is now Australia's most strategic strip of industrial land, according to Prospect.
The Department's director general, Mr Jim Limerick, said the value-adding GTL projects were currently undergoing feasibility studies, and if successful would result in the production of synthetic fuels, lubricants, methanol, dimethyl ether and ammonia.
"If established, these projects will help Australia move towards achieving fuel self-sufficiency and increase the nation's potential to deliver environmentally-friendly fuels to both domestic and export markets," he said.
To highlight the growing importance of GTL and in recognition of WA's position as Australia's number one gas producing region, Perth will host the country's inaugural GTL conference, which will be held at the Sheraton Hotel on 27 and 28 February.
The forum will bring together more than 100 international delegates and will focus on "assessing viability, economics and strategy for GTL," Mr Limerick said.
Conference speakers will include Federal Minister for Industry, Tourism and Resources, Mr Ian MacFarlane as well as the Minister for Resources Development in the Northern Territory, Mr Paul Anderson.
