Lord Browne made the announcement in the Angolan capital of Luanda following a 40-minute meeting with the President of the Republic, Jose Eduardo dos Santos.
"I discussed with the President everything that BP has done in Angola, its future and investments that this multinational will still make in the country", said Lord Browne.
Angola currently produces around 900,000boe (barrels of oil equivalent) per day, and is thought to have the potential to push this to 2 million boe with significant foreign investment.
BP has a share in all three of Angola's principal deepwater blocks, 15, 17, 18 in which significant discoveries have been made, as well as in the ultra-deepwater block 31. In blocks 18 and 31 the company is operator of the exploration and development activities on behalf of the group of companies that are investing in them.
Lord Browne said that BP should also train at least 700 Angolans in the area of petroleum and gas, in Angola and abroad, specifically in South Africa.
