In Canberra for a meeting of all State Premiers to discuss homeland security in wake of the Bali bombing, Dr Gallop said he was happy with intelligence gathering and surveillance.
However, "The one area that I really do want to look at is the speed with which our defences can respond in the event that a threat is disclosed and I think that comes down to the air force and navy," the WA Premier said.
Mr Howard said he would consider all requests but would not replace police with soldiers. "I want to make it plain that the civilian police function is a matter for State police forces," the PM said. "I'm not going to have a situation where the ordinary civilian police role is taken over by the military."
