Angolan reserves continue to climb

Angola continues to stake its claim as Africa's second major oil producer behind Nigeria with Exxon Mobil announcing that, in partnership with Sociedade Nacional de Combustiveis de Angola (Sonangol), it has made two more deepwater oil discoveries.

The discoveries, named Kakocha and Tchihumba, are the fifteenth and sixteenth oil finds on Angola Block 15.

Kakocha-1 was drilled in 1,030m of water to a total depth 2,786m and tested at flow rates of 4,500bopd. Tchihumba-1 was drilled in 1,190m of water to a total depth of 4,171m and tested at flow rates of 7,470bopd.

These discoveries added to previous ones on Angola Blocks 15, 17, 31 and 32, have boosted Exxon’s resource base in Angola to more than 10.5 billion oil-equivalent barrels (gross).

Located around 350km northwest of Luanda, Exxon estimates Block 15 has the potential to recover more than 4 billion oil-equivalent barrels (gross).

In addition to Exxon Mobil (operator, 40%), other participants in Block 15 are BP Exploration (Angola) (26.67%), Eni Angola Exploration B.V. (20%) and Statoil Angola (13.33%). Sonangol is the concessionaire.
