Alleviating the post-conference hangover

PNN is well aware that upstream oil and gas professionals are sensible people who rarely over-indulge in alcohol consumption. But on the off-chance that one or two readers overdid it at last night's APPEA 2008 Conference dinner, we have provided a brief guide to dealing with hangovers.

If, despite your best intentions, the networking cheer got the better of you, avoid the temptation to spring into "hang it all, I have a hangover" mode.

Instead of a grease-laden refried ham hash with eggs, coffee and then more coffee, more ham hash and a good lie down, followed by hair of the dog. That will only make your battered liver work even harder. Instead, focus on what your body has lost and try to replenish it.

You need plenty of water, salt, sugar, vitamin C, magnesium, potassium and B group vitamins. If you have those vitamins in supplement form, take them, along with the recommended dose of a suitable painkiller such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.

You may need a coffee to get started, and recent research suggests that a little coffee the day after a big night is good for the liver.

But limit coffee - too much caffeine will only increase your hangover anxiety and further dehydrate you. Drink plenty of water.

Take yourself off for a 30-minute walk in Kings Park or by the banks of the Swan River. Barry's jog isn't being held today, so there will be fewer wholesome types to irritate you, not that you would have been up that early anyway.

And remember to take it easy at tonight's farewell cocktails.

Oh, and do as we say, not as we do.
