Aviation unsustainable, say activists -- Travel agents selling cheap holiday packages are being targeted by environmental activists in a bid to highlight the environmental damage caused by the airline industry. A UK Group called Plane Stupid are coming to Australia and have already held protests outside several Melbourne travel agencies. Australian member Dan Glass is “calling for airport expansion plans scrapped, a special greenhouse tax on aviation fuel and an end to short haul flights.” Plane Stupid will also target government policy at the federal and state level.

Major biofuel deal to go ahead -- Nearly half of BP’s fuel sales in NSW will contain renewable ethanol after it struck a deal with Manildra Energy Australia. One of Australia’s largest biofuels supply agreements, BP will receive 40ML of ethanol from Manildra’s Bomaderry ethanol plant over the next year. The agreement combined with BP’s existing 15ML ethanol supply deal with CSR makes BP the country’s largest marketer of biofuels.

Transpacific applies for NZ assets – Waste company Transpacific Industries (TPI) has applied for approval to buy part of New Zealand firm EnviroWaste Services, having previously been told it could not buy all the company’s assets in South Island. The New Zealand Commerce Commission blocked the deal on monopoly grounds in June, prompting TPI to seek approval for key assets only.

Greens say SA heading for greenhouse binge -- SA Greens MP Mark Parnell has criticised the State Government for failing to cut greenhouse gas emissions. He says SA has been emitting less than the 1990 level for the last few years but is shaping up to increase its greenhouse pollution over the next 10-15 years as a result of the expansion of BHP-Billiton’s Roxby Downs mine and the broader resources boom.

EcoBiz students train with business -- The Queensland EPA is teaming-up with the Queensland University of Technology to help engineering students gain work experience. Environment Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr says “it provides a wonderful opportunity for tomorrow's engineering leaders to learn more about sustainability."
