The passage within the bill authorises funds already earmarked for the Department of Energy and then conferred to WMPI, a Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania coal and energy outfit, through a Clean Coal Power Initiative (CCPI) as a grant for WMPI's construction costs.
Dubbed the Fischer-Tropsch technology project, it will be the first innovation of its kind in the US to turn waste coal into high quality, zero-sulphur fuel.
"This provision will greatly assist in our national security by improving our domestic energy supply; I am pleased this technology has the added benefit of producing environmentally friendly, ultra-clean, zero-sulphur diesel fuel from waste coal," said Senator Santorum.
