Currently wind power generates almost 1500MW across 14 Texan wind farms, accounting for more than 96% of the state's renewable energy. In 1999, Texas passed a renewable portfolio standard that set a 2000MW renewable energy goal for 2009.
Although a frontrunner in states adopting renewable energy policies, the 2000MW goal is now one of the lowest among the 19 US state-based renewable energy initiatives.
"It's important for Texas to diversify its energy sources and promote the use of our natural resources. The benefits of this legislation are tremendous. Passage of this measure will grow our renewable industries, and draw more money into the Texas economy through increased revenues from school and local taxes and lower electricity costs," said senator Duncan.
The bills follow a submission by senator Troy Fraser in February 2005 for a target of 10% of the state's electricity to come from renewable sources by 2025.
