SABOTEURS have hit a gas pipeline in the Riyadh region of northern Iraq causing an explosion and a fire which continues to burn.

Gas pipeline near Kirkuk hit

This strike follows attacks in the last few days on Al-Khabbaza oil field, an oil pipeline near Kirkuk and an oil storage tank by the section of the pipeline near Mosul.

The blast occurred in the Riyadh region, some 60km southwest of Kirkuk, along the gas pipeline that runs from Kirkuk to the power station in Beiji, according to the Iraqi Northern Oil Co. The company estimated it would take four days to repair the pipeline.

Insurgents frequently target Iraq’s gas and oil infrastructure, which provides much needed revenue for reconstruction efforts.
