Victorian wind farm plan gets blown off

Although the Stanwell Corporation was only in the development stages and was yet to make a formal application to the government, resistance to the Nirranda based project was so fierce that the company decided against further studies.

Approval from the State Government would have been another significant hurdle with the Great Ocean Road declared as an ‘area of significance’ last month.

A spokeswoman for Energy Minister Theo Theophanous said it was government policy that wind farms should not be built in areas of significance.

The result has boosted the hopes of campaigners in South Gippsland and Macedon who are continuing with similar battles against wind farm development.

The search for a green, aesthetically pleasing power source will continue.
