The World Energy Congress is billed as the world’s foremost global multi-energy organisation.

The Hon. Ian Macfarlane, minister for industry, tourism and resources opened the Australian Pavilion at the exhibition yesterday afternoon.

The theme for the Congress is “Delivering Sustainability – Opportunities and Challenges for the Energy Industry”. This theme embraces the three goals for sustainable energy development to 2020 identified in the World Energy Council’s 2000 Millennium Statement “Energy for Tomorrow’s World - Acting Now”- the goals of energy accessibility, availability and acceptability.

The Sydney Congress also builds on the energy deliberations of the World Summit on Sustainable Development held in South Africa in 2002.

The pipeline sector said many issues critical to the long-term performance of the industry are in a major transition cycle, including recent major asset sales.. It said the shape and nature of economic regulation of the gas transmission sector and the energy sector in general is also undergoing the early steps of a major transition cycle.

The event continues until the 9th September.
