SGC said the government consent paves the way for the company to fulfil gas sales contracts with AGL Wholesale Gas Ltd that are worth in excess of $450 million.

CEO, Dr Bruce Butcher, said, “This long-awaited approval is an important step for Sydney Gas. Construction of our new gas plant will commence immediately. It will be located on Sydney’s doorstep - just 500 metres from the main gas transmission lines that bring gas from South Australia and Victoria into New South Wales, and will provide an important alternative supply of energy that is cleaner and more environmentally friendly than traditional fossil fuels.”

A new gas plant will be constructed which is initially sized to supply up to 40 terajoules (“TJs”) of gas per day into the main gas transmission line.
