Esso payouts could top $1 billion

The first payouts from Esso to businesses affected by the Longford disaster's subsequent gas shortage have started to mount, with Supreme Court Justice Bill Gillard predicting the damages bill could rise to A$1 million.

The Barrett Burston Malting business last week won a $1.1 million plus interest compensation claim in Victoria's Supreme Court, arising from a 10 day halt in production after it lost its gas supply in 1998. Two workers also died in the explosion.

The Barrett Burston Malting claim was a test case, with another being run on behalf of chicken retailer, Nandos Australia.
