Maori claim over Pohokura dismissed

The Environment Court yesterday released its decisions on eight resource consent appeals against the proposed development off north Taranaki by partners Shell New Zealand, Todd Energy and OMV Petroleum.

It dismissed the appeal by Maori environmental activists Rata Pue and Huirangi Waikerepuru, though the question of costs against their organisation Te Ohu o Pohokura has yet to be settled. The court said all other appeals had been settled by agreement through amending resource consent conditions.

Last month the court heard appeals by Te Ohu o Pohokura against six resource management consents earlier issued by the Taranaki Regional Council relating to the Pohokura development.

The TRC described the actions of Pue, a veteran energy opponent, as an abuse of the court process, seeking to achieve some rather ill-defined and inevitably misguided ends, usually without the benefit of any evidence; while Pohokura operator Shell Todd Oil Services described Pue's actions as "a merit-less hope".
