The plant is a central part of the development of the Coonarah Gas Field which has proven and probable reserves of 11.3 petajoules, enough to fuel the station for ten years.

The Coonarah Gas Field development plan involves piping natural gas some 20 kilometres from the Coonarah Gas Field to West Narrabri, where gas reciprocating engines will be installed to produce 9-10.5 MW of electrical power.

Electricity produced will be sold into the grid via new power lines connecting the power station to a Country Energy sub-station on the north eastern outskirts of Narrabri.

Eastern Star is the beneficial owner of a 100% interest in the Coonarah project and all conventional oil and gas exploration rights in the 9100 square kilometre PEL 238.
