According to Bloomberg, Gazprom’s deputy chief executive officer Alexander Medvedev told reporters at the Asia-Pacific Economic summit in Sydney that discussions with energy companies in Australia were at a “very initial stage.”
“We have good potential for cooperation in the energy sector with Australian companies,” Medvedev was quoted as saying.
“Possibilities include exchanging natural gas supplied by Gazprom by pipeline for LNG produced by Australian companies.”
The news service reported that when questioned, Medvedev declined to identify potential partners in Australia, where LNG producers include Woodside Petroleum and Santos.
Gazprom already has gas-swap arrangements in Europe, where it exchanges gas sent by pipeline to Europe for LNG bought from other companies that it then delivers to the United States.
