The deal to supply 1.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to Osaka Gas, worth about A$10 billion, follows recent agreements for Chevron to sell 2.7mtpa of Gorgon gas to Tokyo Gas and Chubu Electric.
Chevron has now secured buyers in Japan for 75% of its share of the Gorgon Project. The balance of Chevron’s entitlement to Gorgon LNG from the project’s first two trains of the will be available to supply markets such as North America, where Chevron is pursuing a range of import options, the company said.
Australian minister for trade, Mark Vaile, welcomed the latest Gorgon deal.
“In combination the announcements by Chevron in the past six weeks are now larger than the record $25 billion China deal announced by the North West Shelf joint venture in 2002,” Vaile said.
“This demonstrates the strength of the Australian LNG industry. Australia is becoming a supplier of choice for some of the world’s best gas customers. With this level of international interest, the LNG industry in Australia has a very bright future.”
The Gorgon partners are the Australian subsidiaries of Chevron (50% and operator), shell (25%) and ExxonMobil (25%).
