Korean firms land tanker deals

Three South Korean shipbuilders have landed Qatari contracts worth US$1.789 billion. Both Hyundai Heavy Industries Co (HHI) and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) have inked deals with the Qatargas consortium while Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co’s (DSME) contract is with Qatar Liquefied Gas II, which is a part of Qatargas.

The Qatargas JV is between Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil Corp.

In a joint communiqué HHI and SHI said, “[We have] each won a 506 billion won (US$457 million) order to build two LNG carriers. The vessels are the largest LNG carriers of the type and will be shipping LNG produced in Qatar to Britain.”

“Hyundai and Samsung [are] scheduled to deliver two of the ordered ships by October 2007 and the remaining two by January 2008,” they added without elaborating further.

A report in Bloomberg indicates DSME has been awarded a contract to build four LNG tankers for “a Qatar-based gas producer”.

In a brief statement DSME said, “[We have] a US$875 million contract to build four tankers that can each carry up to 210,000 cubic meters of LNG for Qatar Liquefied Gas II.” It did not elaborate further.
