Mitsubishi had to sell its original stake in MLNG back to Petronas under the terms of a joint venture agreement signed 25 years ago. When it entered discussions with the state-owned oil and gas company to become a shareholder in LLNG again, Petronas agreed to sell Mitsubishi the 5% share.
The importance of MLNG to the Japanese company is seen clearly when it is noted that 13% of Japan's total LNG requirement is supplied by MLNG. MLNG is also the world's largest LNG production facility - in a single location - that produces an aggregated production capacity of 23 million tonnes of LNG per annum.
