BG orders 7 new LNG tankers

South Korean shipbuilding firm, Samsung Heavy Industries, has received an order for seven LNG tankers from gas exploration company BG Group. The price tag? A cool US$414 million.

A spokesperson from BG Group has confirmed that the company would buying three new 145,000 cubic metre ships that will be delivered in 2006. The group would then have the option for a further four more to be delivered in the following year.

"These new ships will help BG build its position as a leading player in liquid natural gas," explained the spokesperson; who also added that the new vessels would allow the group to accelerate its LNG business in the Atlantic basin region.

The BG Group is heavily involved in the developing, managing and supplying existing and emerging gas markets around the world and operates in four key sectors - gas exploration and production, liquefied natural gas, transmission and distribution and power generation.
