The event will review current GTL and CTL plants and projects in Australia and overseas and discuss options to secure an energy future and reduce the country’s dependence on oil imports.
Event organiser, the Australian Journal of Mining, said high oil prices and Australia’s growing energy consumption meant there was a need to develop alternative fuels and encourage the production of liquid fuels from gas and coal fields.
The nation’s energy consumption is set to increase by about 2% a year in the next 25 years.
The international speaker panel will also provide the latest industry updates and discuss the issues and emerging challenges facing the industries.
Day 1 speakers include ABARE senior economist Jammie Penm, who will discuss the outlook for global energy prices and implications for CTL/GTL industries; CRC for Coal in Sustainable Development chief executive Frank van Schagen, who will talk about opportunities and challenges for coal in a world demanding clean energy; Sasol Chevron country manager Australia Pieter Greef; and an international presentation on the proven commercialisation of FT technology in Mossel Bay, South Africa from PetroSA technology development manager Henry de Wet.
In the afternoon, Linc Energy CEO Peter Bond will present a case study on CTL and underground coal gasification and GTL; Carbon Energy executive general manager Cliff Mallett will discuss commercial-scale GTL syngas production from underground coal gasification; and Altona Resources managing director Chris Schrape will talk about Arckaringa CTL being the right power project at the right time for South Australia.
Monash Energy Holdings project manager Roger Bounds will end the day with a presentation on energy security from clean coal.
Day 2 begins with METTS CEO Michael Clarke discussing clean and secure transport fuels for Australia; BP Houston vice president gas products David Robertson will make an international presentation on meeting GTL and CTL market challenges; while Central Petroleum managing director John Heugh will speak about GTL synergies for the monetisation of stranded gas in Central Australia.
Methanol Australia development engineering manager John Robert will talk about the company’s plans for offshore LNG and methanol plants – intermediate step and process synergies.
In the afternoon, Wolfgang Jovanovic from Burrup Fertilisers will give an update on the company’s ammonia plant and Environmental Solutions International CEO Danny Mills will speak about lignite beneficiation.
The final presentation will be from Duncan Sneddon who will discuss the impact of carbon taxes or sequestration costs on the process economics of GTL and CTL.
A two-day pre-conference masterclass will also be held on February 21 and 22.
