Alinta awards A$110m WA gas turbine contract to Alstom

ALSTOM Australia has won a A$110 million contract from Alinta to supply two 162MW gas turbines for the first stage of a major cogeneration facility at Alcoa’s Wagerup refinery in Western Australia.

Wagerup Stage 1 involves the construction of two gas turbines – operating in open-cycle mode – to provide reserve capacity to the new wholesale electricity market in Western Australia, Alinta said.

Construction of the $250 million project is due to start in the third quarter of next year, with completion expected by October 2007.

The Alstom turbines are each capable of operating at 162MW baseload and at 175.5MW peak load.

The second stage will involve adding heat recovery steam generators to the plant, to enable operation as a baseload power station providing both steam and electricity.

General manager of Alinta Power Services, Jim Hennessy, said the contract with Alstom was an important step in bringing Wagerup Stage 1 to fruition.
