Dorrigo seismic gets go ahead

3D OIL has been given the go ahead from the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority to conduct a 3D marine seismic survey across commonwealth waters in the Otway Basin within exploration permit T/49P.

Dorrigo seismic gets go ahead

The Dorrigo seismic survey will be conducted across 1,580 sq.km, some 18km west of King Island in Tasmania in water depths ranging between 100 and 840 metres.

The Dorrigo project will target a series of "significant leads" across the central and southern portion of T/49P with the intention of maturing several of these to prospect status.

One of the key leads being targeted includes the Harbinger prospect, estimated to hold 790 billion cubic feet of prospective resources; however this is based off decade old 2D seismic.

Another potential target for the seismic campaign is the Seal Rocks lead with a best estimate prospective resource of over 4Tcf of gas. This prospect was also identified from a previous 2D seismic.

The company said it intends to combine insight gleaned from the new data with that from existing seismic, to determine the location of the exploration well planned for 2020, subject to funding and securing a suitable exploration partner.

A previous 3D seismic survey across the northern portion of T/49P confirmed the Flanagan Prospect which is estimated to hold a 2C resource of 1.4 trillion cubic feet of gas.

The new 3D seismic is expected to take around 35 to complete and will commence between September and October, a period that avoids the Bonney upwelling coastal period which attracts blue whales.
