BHP accelerates oil hunt

BHP Billiton says it plans to spend $US640 million ($A820 million) in exploration for the 2016 fiscal year, $40 million more than it originally intended, to accelerate exploration in its three big oil play areas as it cracks the whip on its exploration teams to find more conventional oil at a time when the day rates for deep water rigs are low.

Its program is aimed at Tier 1 oil plays in the Beagle Sub-basin of Western Australia, the deep water Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. The company is set to spend $250 million in the June quarter, primarily...
