Taking a punt on Somalia

JUNIOR explorer Range Resources and its partner Africa Oil have contracted a rig to start exploration drilling in Somalia's Puntland region in July.

Taking a punt on Somalia

Range told the market yesterday that the new ETP Rig-3 has been secured to drill two firm wells, with an option over an additional two wells.

The rig, currently being constructed in China, is a 1500hp unit, equipped with the latest drilling technology, according to Range.

Towards the end of last year, Range and Africa Oil finished a seismic program over the Nogal Block, where it said initial drilling would be undertaken.

Future drilling is also planned for the Dharoor block, located elsewhere in Puntland.

Africa Oil, formerly known as Canmex Minerals, is earning an 80% stake in the concessions from Range.
