The Perth-based company said the new EP 455 permit was located close to the site of a proposed power station near the township of Eneabba, and close to a gas pipeline and the Brand Highway.
Comprising six graticular blocks, the 450-square-kilometre permit is surrounded by significant gas discoveries, Westralian said.
Twenty kilometres to the north is the Woodada gas field, while 10km to the northeast is the Ocean Hill-1 discovery, which tested 700,000 cubic feet of gas per day from the Cattamara Coal Measures.
“These coal measures are known from earlier exploration to be shallow in the granted permit,” the company said.
“Their shallowness makes the areas very prospective for both coal seam gas and conventional gas.
“Further, there is also the possibility of liquid hydrocarbons being present in the permit.”
Westralian said its board considered this latest acquisition to be “very important” to its Perth Basin strategy.
