Santos and Sunshine target new coal seam

SANTOS has spudded the first well in a coal seam methane pilot program to test the Juandah coals in Surat Basin permit ATP 336 in Queensland, according to joint venture partner Sunshine Gas.

The Coxon Creek-2 well is designed to establish Juandah Seam CSM production and if successful, bring it into the Roma Joint Venture gas gathering system and to existing gas sales contracts. The well is located in an area confirmed as potentially gas productive by the Rowallon-14 CSM corehole, drilled last October.

If successfully drilled, completed and put on production, Coxon Creek-2 would add to Sunshine’s proven and probable reserve base, the company said.

Coxon Creek-2 is the first of up to four CSM pilot wells to spud that are targeting the Juandah coal seam.

At 6am this morning (EST), Coxon Creek-2 had reached a depth of 167m and preparing to drill out of 9 5/8-inch intermediate casing.

With a planned total depth of 410m, the well will also evaluate the potential of the Taroom coal seams.
