China, Kazakhstan to cooperate on oil and gas

China and Kazakhstan have agreed to work together on a range of oil and gas projects. The framework agreement between the two nations comes on the back of a state visit to China by Kazakh President Nursultan Abishevich Nazarbayev.

In a joint communiqué with Chinese President Hu Jintao, Nazarbayev said, “Agreements concerning cooperation in areas of economy and trade, energy, transportation and agriculture are of great importance to the development of bilateral relations.”

“To expand and deepen cooperation in areas of oil and natural gas is of strategic importance to the economic development of the two countries,” added the statement.

Aside from agreeing to closer ties in the oil and gas sector, Nazarbayev reiterated Kazakhstan’s support for Chinese oil companies conducting E&P activities in the Caspian Sea. Both leaders also agreed feasibility studies on the laying of natural gas pipelines between the two nations should be accelerated.

China and Kazakhstan established full diplomatic relations 12 years ago.
